Morris Day and the Time lead a list of 1970s and 1980s dance-tune groups in a Flashback Funk Fest at Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday, Feb. 15.
Aging groups and fans will groove to familiar songs such as Day’s “Jungle Love” and (further back) “Car Wash” by Rose Royce, as well as “Fantastic Voyage” by the group Lakeside.
Also expect hits like “More Bounce to the Ounce,” by the Zapp Band, dance-happy “S.O.S.” by the S.O.S. Band, and the distinctive vocals of “Word Up” by the band Cameo.
An outgrowth of R&B, funk music was created by African-American musicians as they combined elements of soul and jazz with R&B and amped up the moving beat and strong bass lines, according to Study.com. As a result, funk featured more complex rhythms than soul music (not to mention less-incendiary lyrics than hip-hop).
