BRANFORD — For 26 years, Darbar India has been Branford’s Indian restaurant, the go-to place — right across from the Green — when Branfordites and others along the shoreline want chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, navrattan korma, butter chicken or all sorts of spicy and piquant curries.

But right now it’s in trouble.

Opened at 1070 Main St. in 1994, Darbar, owned by Haresh Nariyani and his sister, Manju Gidwani, has remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

It donated hundreds of meals to area health care workers and other first responders this winter and spring at a time when its own business was drastically reduced, initially just doing takeout and later reopening its dining room and installing outdoor seating to serve reduced numbers.
