A nationwide outage impacting the vendor used by the state Department of Motor Vehicles continued to impact services Thursday.
The DMV’s vehicle inspection vendor, Applus Technologies, told the agency Tuesday that emissions testing was unable to be performed because of a system outage.
“The vendor has confirmed this is a nationwide system outage that they are working to resolve,” the DMV said. “DMV has notified law enforcement to ask for their cooperation to not cite those with an expired emissions test during this outage.”
The vendor, Applus Technologies, said in a statement that it detected and stopped a malware attack. The company said the attack temporarily interrupted the process of vehicle inspections in Massachusetts — where Applus Tech is based — and other locations.
Applus Tech said the restoration to its system requires a rest of the company’s IT environment. The company said it will take some time to fully restore the functionality of vehicle inspections.
“Unfortunately, incidents such as this are fairly common and no one is immune,” said Darrin Greene, CEO of Applus Technologies. “We apologize for any inconvenience this incident may cause. We know our customers and many vehicle owners rely on our technology and we are committed to restoring normal operations as quickly as possible.”
