Old Saybrook barbershop offers free haircuts to vets on Veteran’s Day

Barber Kevin Shea cuts a customer’s hair at Kevin Edward Gentleman’s Barber Shop where free haircuts are being offered to veterans their families on Veteran’s Day.

OLD SAYBROOK — Veterans are in for a special treat on Veteran’s Day at Kevin Edward Gentleman’s Barber Shop. Bring your military identification for a free haircut for you and any family member with you.

“They put their lives on the line for us, every day, and I want to give back to them and just show some support to them and their families,” says owner/barber Kevin Shea.

The shop, located at 787 Boston Post Road, is open on Monday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to extend this offer to veterans “near and far,” says Shea.

He does request that all customers bring in a nonperishable food item to be donated to the Shoreline Soup Kitchen.

The shop has five chairs that can be filled for the day. Currently, Shea, Kelsey Frobel and Laurel Diana are scheduled to cut hair and Shea is looking for two additional barbers to volunteer their time.

The Westbrook resident’s nephew recently enlisted in the Marine Corps and will begin his duty on Nov. 18.

“I think every family has a veteran” he says. “Every family, if you look back, every family here in Old Saybrook, every family everywhere, somebody’s got a veteran somewhere.”

Shea hopes this gesture will brighten the day for these local veterans who often get lost in the system.

“This is one thing that will make them feel good about themselves,” he says.
